Literacy

At St Patrick’s we strive to engage students in a purposeful and relevant literacy program. We aim to empower learners to engage confidently with the English language, aspiring to develop students who are able to communicate and comprehend effectively in their world. We believe that literacy is a fundamental life skill which will equip students with the ability to make informed choices throughout their lives.

Our Literacy program focuses on developing strong reading, writing, and oral language skills, providing the essential building blocks for future learning. We believe that literacy is central to the growth of confident, capable, and lifelong learners, and it is woven through all areas of the curriculum.
Each day, students participate in a dedicated two-hour Literacy block. During this time, teachers explicitly teach essential skills, including:

• Daily phonics lessons (Prep – Year 2) and morphology lessons (Years 3–6)
• Phonological awareness
• Vocabulary development
• Reading fluency
• Comprehension strategies
• Handwriting
• Grammar
• Writing at the sentence, paragraph, and text level

Students are regularly assessed in Literacy to guide teaching, personalise learning, and ensure that every student is supported to reach their full potential.
